4 Things Your Roof Is Trying to Tell You

Roofing woes are part of being a homeowner. The good news is that your roof usually gives you signs when it is need of repair. It’s a good idea to be aware of these signs, but it helps to first know what these signs look like.

4 Things Your Roof Is Trying to Tell You

Exterior Source®, your trusted roofing specialist, shares the four most common problems below and how to know when your roof needs a checkup.

1. Your Roof Has a Leak

A leak is the most common issue homeowners have with their roofing systems. Often, homeowners aren’t even aware that their roofs have sprung leaks until the damage is considerable. Water spots on the ceiling is a sure sign.

2. Your Shingles Are at the End of Their Lifespan

You may notice granules in your gutters. This is a natural symptom of the degradation of roof shingles, but if the granules seem much more numerous than usual, especially after a storm, you should be concerned. This means that the deterioration process has already begun and, depending on its severity, you might need a roof replacement.

3. Your Attic is Not Properly Vented

You’ll know that this is the issue when you notice that the shingles on your roof are cupping. Luckily, you can solve this problem by reshingling your roof. While age does the same to shingles, the problem is often accelerated when your attic lacks proper ventilation.

4. Algae is Growing On your Shingles

Black stains on your shingles can only mean algae growth. Though the presence of algae on shingles doesn’t pose any risk to the roof’s structure, but it can be unsightly, especially if it’s on the side facing the street. Too much of it can diminish your home’s curb appeal.
